The American Civil War lasted for four years, beginning in 1861 and ending in 1865. The war was fought between the Union Army of the north and the Confederacy forces
of the south.

Black colored men fought for the Union and played an integral part in winning the war against the Confederacy; it included both the Northern free blacks and the Southern slaves that broke free from their masters.

By the end of the civil war, over 186,000 black men had served as soldiers for the Union Army - consisting of 10% of the entire Union Army;  7,122 were officers, an additional 20,000 were part of the Union Navy service.

Over 10,000 black colored soldiers died from the war - 30,000 died from infection and disease. In total, black colored soldiers took part in over 40 major battles and hundreds more in minor skirmishes throughout the course of the war.
