Theosophy is an occult movement that originated in the late 19th century. The name derives from two Greek words- theos (god) and sophia (wisdom). Early forms of its doctrines were held in the Middle Ages by groups like the Bogomils in Bulgaria, the Cathari in southern France and Italy and the Rosicrucians in Germany. Later on, speculative Freemasons adopted theosophical views, which also spawned the international New Age movement of the 1970s and ’80s.

The Theosophical Society was founded in New York in 1875 by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. Madame Blavatsky was a former world traveler who collected different philosophies about the nature of life and human existence. Her writings, the first in most theosophy, combined the ancient mysteries of the West with the spiritual wisdom of the East.

The books on this collection cover various aspects of theosophical tradition, from its emphasis on mystical experience to the inner teachings of modern religion. In total, they present a fascinating overview of the theosophical belief that we are sparks of the divine who are temporarily trapped in the material world and want to return to our spiritual home.

Take a look at the sample pages taken from just some of these books in the collection.
