Spanish is considered a Romance Language, derived from Vulgar Latin between the 3rd and 8th century; a branch of the Italic languages in the Indo-European language family. It first originated in the Iberian Peninsula, with the oldest Latin texts containing the Spanish language traced back to the 9th century. Spanish is one of the closest Romance languages to Latin, with a distance of 20%; around 75% of the Spanish vocabulary is derived from Latin. It is also influenced by the Arabic language during  the Al-Andalus era; around 8% of Spanish vocabulary has an Arabic lexical root.

Other languages that had an influence on the Spanish language includes neighboring Ibero-Romance languages, Celtiberian, Basque, Iberian, and Visigothic. In addition, some of the vocaulary were borrowed from other Romance languages such as Catalan, Portuguese, Andalusi Romance, French, Galician, Sardinian, Italian, Occitan, and other indigenous languages of the Americas (ie - Quechua, Nahuatl).

Spanish is a global language, and is the world's 4th most spoken language - behind English, Mandarin Chinese, and Hindi. It is the 2nd most spoken native language, with Mandarin Chinese being the first. Today, there are over 483 million native speakers of Spanish; the majority in Spain, North America, and South America.

It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, as well as an official language in the European Union, Union of South American Nations, African Union,  Organization of American States, Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, as well as other international unions. Although Spanish has a large number of speakers, it is not used widely in scientific writings.

In this collection, you can learn all about the Spanish language, from beginner lessons to more advanced materials. Learn about Spanish grammar, vocabulary, phrases, idioms, conversation, colloquial words, phonology, syntax, synonyms, etymology, pronunciation, and more. Included are dictionaries, lessons, readers, courses, and phrasebooks.

Take a look at the sample pages taken from just some of these books in the collection.
